9th November 2008 Geoff Barton Memorial Sportrap

Cold, bright weather greeted a record breaking turnout for the Sportrap competition held at Country Pursuits on 9 th November. This was the Geoff Barton Memorial Sportrap commemorating the life of Geoff Barton. A keen Sportrap shooter and Country Pursuits Member, sadly Geoff passed away last year. Members, friends and family have clubbed together to fund a fabulous silver cup for this ongoing annual event.

Not only was today the Geoff Barton Memorial Sportrap it was of course Remembrance Sunday. A whistle was blown at 11.00 to stop shooting and two minutes' silence was observed.

The Course

Strong, gusty winds contributed to fast jagging crossers and added an interesting element to some of the “vertically variable” birds. The targets that sorted out the men from the boys included a left to right downward, dropping, bumblebee on layout 1 designed to tease. A dinner plate on layout 2 that took on the appearance of a hovering Frisbee, not quite as easy as it looked; some people took both barrels and still missed it, but got it eventually – no names eh?

Layout 3 offered a supersonic crosser that you just had to believe that you were on, or you’d miss it. Finally layout 4 was an excellent lesson in how to shoot Sportrap. Whilst all the targets were eminently hittable as singles, you had to think very hard about what order to go in for the sim pairs.

Prize Giving

We were honoured that Tonya Barton and her two lovely daughters ZoeY aged 12, and Zara aged 9, were able to attend the day and present the trophy. [Zoe is keen to point out that her name does indeed have a Y and has requested a “designer Y”– we’ve done our best and hope you like it Zoe]. Rumour has it that they may very well be following in their father’s footsteps and are interested in taking up the sport. That is exactly what we need: more juniors and more ladies – we look forward to seeing you all in the near future at Country Pursuits, where you would be most welcome.

Special thanks go to Kaye in the kitchen; Alan Sullivan and Alan Stronge for designing the layout; referees Phil, Greg, Bob and Clare; and also JJ and Andy for ensuring that the traps were all going strong and that the refs could get a break. Thank you all very much.

1st October 2008 Country Pursuits Members Shoot for Winning Team

Two Country Pursuits members, David Christensen and Rod Gifford, shot for Cambridgeshire in the East Midlands Intercounties Skeet Competition at Sywell. This is the first time that Cambridgeshire has won this title for thirteen years. Further congratultions go to Rod for shooting 100 straight!

30th September 2008 Members' Newsletter

Dear Member,

Trust you had a good summer, despite the weather. Alan is back on his feet and grateful to the faithful few that rolled up their sleeves to help keep the club going whilst he was hopping about.

During the summer the 'club' has had a lot of support for the Friday night Sportrap, which has now finished for this year. But its finish heralds the start of the Winter Series and the first of the six on the 12th October is dedicated to the memory of Geoff Barton. Tony, his father, is funding a decent trophy and we as a club, plus members, would like to contribute too, in order to create an event that will stand. [NB THE DATE HAS BEEN MOVED TO 9TH NOVEMBER TO AVOID AN INTER-COUNTIES ESP CLASH]

For those of you that didn't know Geoff, the Sportrap event was something he excelled at. And we think Tony should be supported in his desire to have a lasting tribute to his son's achievements. Alan will collect all the contributions and Bob has tweaked the rules to make this year's Winter Series the best yet. The dates are 12th October, 9th November, 14th December, 11th January, 8th February and 8th March. Best four out of six scores to count.

Sarah has been trying very hard to make the web site reflect the club's achievements so please let her know what you have been up to that is worthy of mention. Anything has to be better than our shooting team at the Olympics this year.

Safe shooting out there.

Yours faithfully

Gregory J Kirby (Secretary)

27th August 2008 News

Alan has now had his other hip done and is recuperating - we wish him a speedy recovery. We need all the help we can get to help set up shoots, tidy the ground, load traps and carry out other duties that contribute to making the club a success. Even if you only have a spare hour to come and load some traps, that would be great. Call Greg on 0208 2935440, or Alan on 07774 616169 or 01353 669300 or email info@countrypursuitscambridge.co.uk

Calling all qualified First Aiders

Whilst we pride ourselves on our excellent safety record, we are required to have First Aiders present on the ground during CPSA registered shoots. If you are a qualified First Aider and can help, please let Greg know on 0208 2935440 or info@countrypursuitscambridge.co.uk

10th August 2008 Registered Sportrap

An interesting set of targets greeted shooters on Sunday. There were a few fairly easy targets so that newcomers to the discipline could have a fair crack of the whip. A lot of work had been put in to provide some very deceptive birds using unusual angles and non-standard sized clays. These proved a challenge especially as the weather became somewhat gusty later in the day.

Congratulations to B McClements and, M Strickland for winning AA and A class respectively. B class was shared three ways between G Carter, P Hodson and N Templeman. Finally P Moore and J Pearson won C class with an outstanding 72. Well Done!

Anytime within the next few months will see Alan hospitalised, so please let us know if you can help on Saturdays to set up the shoots. All help welcome, even if you've had no experience before.

We need people to design layouts (or parts of them), set up traps, cut grass, make tea, tidy the ground up, and load clays. All help gratefully received. Call Greg on 0208 2935440, or Alan on 07774 616169 or 01353 669300 or email info@countrypursuitscambridge.co.uk

15th June 2008 Sportrap

The raw scores for the Cambridgeshire County sportrap are on the right with Cambridgeshire shooters shown in bold. It was an open competition so shooters from other counties were most welcome.

Brian Dunbavin retained his Championship with 86 (although outshot by one on the day by Paul Simpson of Suffolk), four ahead of Junior Champion Phil Gray on 82. Rod Gifford won the Veterans' title with 77, and newcomer Kay Hodson took the Ladies' with 37. Josh Pearson put in an impressive 75 to take the Colts' title. Also worthy of a mention was 9 year-old Taylor Hedgecock's 58.

11th May 2008 Sportrap

Pleasant warm weather was the order of the day with enough cloud cover to help with the high birds if lucky. Layout one included a rabbit for a refreshing change, and added an interesting element on the simultaneous pairs. Layout two, as usual, teased everyone with the right to left crosser out in the field. Layout three looked simple enough, if only one could take the targets one at a time. Again the simultaneous pairs made the difference with ability. Layout four was tweaked to give it an air of freshness that stifled the "same old, same old" critics. In fact so much so a 9 was recorded. No names, no pack drill eh? Congratulations to Pietro Mastroeni on winning with 88.

Overall the targets were well received and only the most heartless could criticise Alan's superb effort in putting the show together, all the more impressive in view of the impending hip operation.

Anytime within the next three months will see Alan hospitalised, so please let us know if you can help on Saturdays to set up the shoots. All help welcome, even if you've had no experience before. 13th April 2008 Winter Series Grand Final

The layout was very good, with some testing targets which were, thankfully, not affected by the weather. There were some problems with a couple of traps which held matters up, but overall shooters were generally understanding and good humoured!!!!

Brian Dunbavin won with a score of 89, reflecting the degree of difficulty. Well done to those who won, commiserations to those who didn't - there's always the 2008-2009 Winter Series! Maybe some Summer practice during the Friday Night "hard" sportrap to hone your skills.

The sixth in the Winter Series championship was shot on Sunday 9th March. Barry Simpson was only marginally pipped to the post by Brian Dunbavin. S Lambert and M Bedford drew on 85 each. Some impressive scores were put in and a couple of personal bests unless I'm very much mistaken Tosh? Bob? Well done!

10th February 2008 News

Don't worry, your webmistress has not abandoned you, she merely went on holiday (and nearly threw her passport away...). Now thoroughly refreshed, she's back in the saddle to give you the lowdown on goings on at Country Pursuits. The 5th round of the Winter Series Sportrap saw glorious weather with shooters turning up in T-shirts. Spring has definitely sprung. Once more Alan and Andy set up a superb shoot with Bob, Greg and Andy doing sterling work in the reffing department (in Andy's case, it was his first time, but didn't he do well). The new layout scorecards seem to make reffing easier, but as ever, we always need more referees. If you are qualified, or would even like to give it a go, please contact Bob and Greg for more details of what is involved and how you may be rewarded for your efforts. If shooters know that you are new to it they'll usually slow down a bit to let you get the hang of buttoning and scoring at the same time. And this month's top dogs are:
