Dear Member,
Trust you had a good summer, despite the weather. Alan is back on his feet and grateful to the faithful few that rolled up their sleeves to help keep the club going whilst he was hopping about.
During the summer the 'club' has had a lot of support for the Friday night Sportrap, which has now finished for this year. But its finish heralds the start of the Winter Series and the first of the six on the 12th October is dedicated to the memory of Geoff Barton. Tony, his father, is funding a decent trophy and we as a club, plus members, would like to contribute too, in order to create an event that will stand. [NB THE DATE HAS BEEN MOVED TO 9TH NOVEMBER TO AVOID AN INTER-COUNTIES ESP CLASH]
For those of you that didn't know Geoff, the Sportrap event was something he excelled at. And we think Tony should be supported in his desire to have a lasting tribute to his son's achievements. Alan will collect all the contributuions and Bob has tweaked the rules to make this year's Winter Series the best yet. The dates are 12th October, 9th November, 14th December, 11th January, 8th February and 8th March. Best four out of six scores to count.
Sarah has been trying very hard to make the web site reflect the club's acheivements so please let her know what you have been up to that is worthy of mention. Anything has to be better than pur shooting team at the Olympics this year.
Safe shooting out there.
Yours faithfully
Gregory J Kirby (Secretary)

An interesting set of targets greeted shooters on Sunday. There were a few fairly easy targets so that newcomers to the discipline could have a fair crack of the whip. A lot of work had been put in to provide some very deceptive birds using unusual angles and non-standard sized clays. These proved a challenge especially as the weather became somewhat gusty later in the day. Congratulations to B McClements and, M Strickland for winning AA and A class respectively. B class was shared three ways between G Carter, P Hodson and N Templeman. Finally P Moore and J Pearson won C class with an outstanding 72. Well Done! Anytime within the next few months will see Alan hospitalised, so please let us know if you can help on Saturdays to set up the shoots. All help welcome, even if you've had no experience before. We need people to design layouts (or parts of them), set up traps, cut grass, make tea, tidy the ground up, and load clays. All help gratefully received. County Championship Sportrap
The raw scores for the Cambridgeshire County sportrap are on the right with Cambridgeshire shooters shown in bold. It was an open competition so shooters from other counties were most welcome. Brian Dunbavin retained his Championship with 86 (although outshot by one on the day by Paul Simpson of Suffolk), four ahead of Junior Champion Phil Gray on 82. Rod Gifford won the Veterans' title with 77, and newcomer Kay Hodson took the Ladies' with 37. Josh Pearson put in an impressive 75 to take the Colts' title. Also worthy of a mention was 9 year-old Taylor Hedgecock's 58. |

Pleasant warm weather was the order of the day with enough cloud cover to help with the high birds if lucky. Layout one included a rabbit for a refreshing change, and added an interesting element on the simultaneous pairs. Layout two, as usual, teased everyone with the right to left crosser out in the field. Layout three looked simple enough, if only one could take the targets one at a time. Again the simultaneous pairs made the difference with ability. Layout four was tweaked to give it an air of freshness that stifled the "same old, same old" critics. In fact so much so a 9 was recorded. No names, no pack drill eh? Congratulations to Pietro Mastroeni on winning with 88. Overall the targets were well received and only the most heartless could criticise Alan's superb effort in putting the show together, all the more impressive in view of the impending hip operation.
Anytime within the next three months will see Alan hospitalised, so please let us know if you can help on Saturdays to set up the shoots. All help welcome, even if you've had no experience before. We need people to design layouts (or parts of them), set up traps, cut grass, make tea, tidy the ground up, and load clays. All help gratefully received. Winter Series Grand Final
The layout was very good, with some testing targets which were, thankfully, not affected by the weather. There were some problems with a couple of traps which held matters up, but overall shooters were generally understanding and good humoured!!!!
Brian Dunbavin won with a score of 89, reflecting the degree of difficulty. Well done to those who won, commiserations to those who didn't - there's always the 2008-2009 Winter Series! Maybe some Summer practice during the Friday Night "hard" sportrap to hone your skills.

The sixth in the Winter Series championship was shot on Sunday 9th March. Barry Simpson was only marginally pipped to the post by Brian Dunbavin. S Lambert and M Bedford drew on 85 each. Some impressive scores were put in and a couple of personal bests unless I'm very much mistaken Tosh? Bob? Well done! For the finalists entering the final on 13th April and full results see here

Don't worry, your webmistress has not abandoned you, she merely went on holiday (and nearly threw her passport away...). Now thoroughly refreshed, she's back in the saddle to give you the lowdown on goings on at Country Pursuits. The 5th round of the Winter Series Sporttrap saw glorious weather with shooters turning up in T-shirts. Spring has definitely sprung. Once more Alan and Andy set up a superb shoot with Bob, Greg and Andy doing sterling work in the reffing department (in Andy's case, it was his first time, but didn't he do well). The new layout scorecards seem to make reffing easier, but as ever, we always need more referees. If you are qualified, or would even like to give it a go, please contact Bob and Greg for more details of what is involved and how you may be rewarded for your efforts. If shooters know that you are new to it they'll usually slow down a bit to let you get the hang of buttoning and scoring at the same time.

Well done and your prize money is being kept for you!
The third sporttrap competition in Country Pursuits' Winter Series took place on 9th December. Andy and Alan worked through appalling weather on Saturday to set up an interesting and challenging shoot, only to have to move everything as the weather changed dramatically on Sunday morning! 33 competitors braved the squally conditions. As if that were not enough, the region suffered a mains powercut affecting local farms, houses, and of course some of the traps. Not to be defeated, Alan and Andy rigged up a generator to enable the shoot to continue. Kaye, in the meantime, was cooking on gas so the bacon buttie and hot drinks supply was uninterrupted although the surroundings were somewhat dark and reminiscent of a school disco! Many thanks also go out to the refs trying to trap and score on sodden cards. A special thankyou goes to a couple of generous souls who volunteered unbidden not only to help score and trap in heavy rain, but thought to stand over the refs with big golf umbrellas to make it easier. You have no idea how much you were appreciated!
...and the scores on the doors were:

Many congratulations go to the winners and especially to A Stronge who bagged top gun of 91 and is rated A class!
The Lloyds TSB open was a resounding success with a high turnout; a mixture of regulars together with some new faces - great to see you! The high gun cash prize was shared by M Papworth and N Walpole on 48 ex 50. In trophy class Kyle Woodhall-Cross won first place on 45 - excellent shooting and certainly a name to keep an eye on as Kyle is a junior! B McClements and J Pearson fought over 2nd and 3rd place both scoring 44. Mr McClements gallantly stepped down to allow Mr Pearson to take the second place trophy while accepting the third place trophy for himself. The Lloyds TSB Country Pursuits Members' shield was won by A Stronge on 47. Excellent shooting and thank you to Lloyds TSB Agricultural for sponsoring the event so generously.

(Apologies for poor quality of photos - autofocus malfunction)
The second of six in the Winter Series was shot on 11th November. There were 32 entrants with J Bladen scoring a fantastic 91. A good turnout bearing in mind the number of people who have been struck down with lurgies of one variety or another. Now that's commitment!
Grotty, gusty and dull weather conditions greeted the competitors for the 1sthome Sponsored Open at Chittering, but it takes more than that to put you lot off!. 50 birds over 5 stands were made even more interesting by the unpredictable gusting wind. Stand 1 was a pretty fast left to right followed by an orange teal which very definitely was not hanging about. Stand 2 offered a quartering out bird followed by a fast right to left. Stand 3 challenged people to not laugh at the hanging dustbin lid, but plenty of shooters misjudged it as the wind carried away the target. This was followed by a fast right to left out in the fields. Stand 4 sorted out the men (and one girl) from the boys with a close, fast incoming bird followed by a flat orange bird streaking right to left into the fields. Finally Stand 5, sheltered by the trees, saw a deceptive sim pair consisting of a quartering out bird from the left and an overhead away bird.

Congratulations go to A Stronge who collected £30 for winning this 1sthome sponsored open competition by one target. This was after a shootoff with D Christensen who came second and was rewarded with £20. Both shot 43 ex 50. In trophy class G Bourne came first, with D Peart-Smith 2nd and A Tyte 3rd. Congratulations all, thank you to 1sthome for sponsoring this competion and to Kaye and the kitchen staff for keeping us all well fed and watered. Thanks also to all the volunteers for setting up and running the competition. Many of the cages and signs have been repainted making the ground look very smart indeed, and of course prolonging the life of the equipment. Thank you to all the volunteers who gave up their spare time to help make the club a success.
Unfortunately, Country Pursuits member Geoff Barton passed away earlier this year. He was an excellent Sportrap shot and won the County Sportrap Championship on a number of occasions. He will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with his wife and young family.
The May STR had some good targets and a decent turnout, but the weather varied from wet to absolutely firehose. Steve Lambert took high gun and A class on 91, with Pietro Mastroeni close behind on 88. B class was tied on 80 between Brian Paddington and David Christensen, whilst Tosh took his last opportunity on the old classifications to stomp on C class with 78: somehow I think we'll seem him in B class next month! See the Winter series page here.
The final round of the winter series STR to determine who goes into the final was an interesting affair. Although average scores came out within 0.1 of the series as a whole, the hits were not evenly distributed. Layout 1 was a gentle introduction - straighted by Brian Dunbavin - with some nice easy targets, but was poor preparation for layout 2 with its "wascally wabbits" in close but bouncy mode. Layout 3 had some technically hard targets testing everyone's judgement of speed, distance and angle - not least the jet-propelled midi in the field and the two very different quartering birds from left and right. Layout 4 was a softer ending for most people, although the mini below hedge level was not for the faint-hearted. Details of how it all turned out in terms of finalist is shown on the winter series page here.
The 5th of 6 in the winter series was held on Feb 11th. 19 of the 29 shooters on the day are still in the winter series. The full results for the day were headed up by Barry Simpson putting in an impressive 93 (including one 25 straight layout) to win overall and AA, two targets ahead of Brian Dunbavin. Paul Clemence, in A, was close behind on 89. B and C classes were almost a re-run of last month's pair of ties; Dave Peart Smith clinching B class by 1 point from Dave Christensen, whilst Tosh "I'm a ringer" McIntosh pushed Sarah Christensen into second place this time with 78 to her 70. 14th January saw the 4th in the winter series sporttrap. An excellent layout from Alan Sullivan provided 3 layouts that the AAs thought they should straight - although only one did on one of the layouts - and the rest of us merely enjoyed, and one layout that really sorted the men from the boys (and the ladies from the girls). Messrs Dunbavin, Grant and Clemence took the top three places with 93,91 and 90 respectively, although competition was equally stiff in the lower classes with two Daves (Christensen and Peart-Smith) sharing first place in B class on 80, and Sarah Christensen and Tosh sharing first place in C on 71. A very enjoyable shoot in surprisingly mild weather for mid January. Must be global warming!
Greetings to all our readers. And the good news is that the winter series results page is finally (sorry for the delay) up for this year - see here.
The annual club turkey shoot - where clays are shot and turkeys are won, just in case any visitors think we might be shooting turkeys! - was won by Matt Bedford; chastened by being second on 45ex50 at his first attempt, he re-entered to score a commendable 47ex50 on his second attempt, winning the Big Bird by one from David Christensen on 46, and Rod Gifford taking the little turkey with 44. A fine shoot, with a good mix of targets.
Country Pursuits Cambridge hosted the November CPSA registered Sportrap event and second heat of the club's Winter Series on Sunday 12th November. The weather was in our favour as the wind had dropped which in turn encouraged a good turnout.
4 layouts with 25 birds per layout awaited the participants. Layout 1 was set up to allow everyone to build their confidence and scores. An easy overhead, a couple of slow crossers, a quartering out standard and a vertical teal were tackled without too many problems.
Layout 2 introduced the rabbit traps and here some shooters struggled, but with a quartering out and a couple of slow crossers on the combinations the field coped well enough.
Layout 3 introduced a looper, a low quartering out, a teal that came back in giving plenty of time to shoot and a pair of crossers posed few problems for the entrants.
Layout 4 was time to sort the men out from the boys. Three targets were pretty straightforward, The E bird crosser caught many out but the D bird, a teal set out and going out took a lot by surprise. Those that found it formed their own D bird club and felt better for hitting that one target than anything else on offer.
Out of a very strong field of over 30 only one can be the winner and the glory goes to Rod Gifford from Soham. Rod, no stranger to winning, scored 85 ex 100. Right on his tail in second and winning AA class was Brian Dunbavin, again from Soham, on 84. In third was Alan Stronge from Chittering on 81.
Results in classes. AA B. Dunbavin 84, A Stronge 81, C Morris 77, A class R Gifford 85, G Barton 79, D Christensen 79, B class F McIntosh 78, N Templeman 72, P Moore 71, Class C M Canham, 76, G Carter 71, D Peart-Smith 69.
Congratulations to all that entered the competition and a big thank you
to Alan and the team for setting up some challenging targets. With the
new clays from CCI giving a more reliable bird, everyone experienced a
much better shooting experience whatever their score.
Brilliant weather conditions greeted the competitors for the 1sthome Sponsored Open at Chittering. 50 birds over 5 stands and a fiendish pool shoot lay in store. Most had no trouble with stand 1, a bouncy rabbit followed by a quartering out standard. Likewise stand 2 with a following pair. Stand 3 too was easy, a going away midi followed by a standard looping incomer. Stand 4 however was evil. A vertical teal that caused controversy as competitors argued over chipping bits of it as it either flew straight up like a bat out of hell or descended faster than a lead balloon. This was followed by a straightforward standard crossing slowly from right to left, but by then the damage was done. Stand 5 was a welcome relief to any sufferings, a slowing left to right rabbit followed by a lazy incomer. Whoever failed to straight this stand please see me afterwards.
Being Halloween it was a time to slay ghosts. And in our case it was the quality of the clays. Having recently changed supplier the quality of the targets was shown to be much improved and the no bird situation was in most cases non existent.
And now to the results. Geoff Barton was the highest club member in the Open on 45, having won the trophy last year he gallantly stepped aside to allow a new name to be engraved. This year's trophy winner was Graham Carter from Ely on 38, who should have scored better, followed by Bob Pitt from Soham on 36 who definitely should have scored better, jet lag being the excuse.
The pool shoot was for most of the day shared at 8. An easy left to right crosser followed by a teal that looked like it was launched from the A10. It was eventually won on 11 by consistent shooting from Nigel Walpole, a regular visitor from Suffolk.
Well done to Alan Sullivan from Ely for setting up what proved to be a splendid variety of targets. And his score on the pool shoot shows that there is no advantage to setting up the day before.
Next competition is the Winter Series Sportrap on the 12th November
The October STR was the first big trial for the new CCI Clays. Trappers were recording no-birds on score cards so that we could judge the success of the change of clays, and overall recorded less than 2% no birds. On the squad that I (your webmaster, Dave C) was on, we had less than 1% no birds. Come down and give it a try, it's a great improvement!
We have just changed clay supplier. Henceforth, the clay targets at Country Pursuits will be provided by CCI, leading to better reliability and "a shattering experience". Do let us know whether you think it is an improvement!
Fulton McIntosh, CPSA Qualified Instructor, is now taking bookings for lessons at Country Pursuits. In addition to his home coaching base out in the wilds of Suffolk, Fulton's Shooting instruction for beginners and improvers is now available by appointment at our ground. Contact Tosh for more details at coaching@countrypursuitscambridge.co.uk for more details.
Brilliant calm weather greeted the competitors for the first Lloyds TSB
Agriculture 50 bird Open to be held at the ground.
The targets were set out as 10 birds to be shot from 5 stands designed
by Alan Sullivan. Stand 1 utilised a tricky mini that some found
impossible to see, let alone hit. Stand 2 a distant rabbit followed by a
battue again proving difficult for many competitors. Stand 3, 4 and 5
were a bit more user friendly and allowed many to build up their scores
to a respectable level.
But there can only be one winner and that was Geoff Barton from Burwell
who added the Lloyds TSB Agriculture Trophy and welly bag for high gun
to his growing collection. A splendid effort scoring 46 ex 50.
In trophy class, 1st place was won on 34 ex 50 by Graham Carter, a well
known character from Ely, who was thrilled with not only his trophy but
of course the obligatory Lloyds TSB welly bag. 2nd place on 33 was Dave
Peart-Smith from Newmarket, who really could use a new welly bag. And in
3rd place, from Cambridge was David Christensen on 32, who now has to
buy some wellies for his new bag.
The pool shoot was won by Matt Bedford from Ely on 11.
Well done to the winners and a big round of thanks to all the
competitors for supporting the event, and to Lloyds TSB for their
generous sponsorship.
The county sportrap was held at Country Pursuits over both days this weekend. More details of this controversial shoot are here.
Another challenging open this month. Big hitters Paul Simpson and Steve Grant dropped in on the club to show us what they could do: 41ex50 from Paul, narrowly beaten by Steve Grant on 42, demonstrating that this was no easy shoot. Which makes the trophy results all the more interesting: although the main Trophy Winner was Glyn on 37, the highest trophy class score was Sarah Christensen in the Ladies' Trophy, with 38. Well done Sarah.
The last Sunday in the month was the date for our latest "open". 50
birds over five stands waited for the competitors. The targets were all
on report pairs and were a mix of teal, rabbit and driven with some
sneaky crossers to give the field a bit more of a challenge.
The inclement bank holiday weather held off long enough for some
enthusiastic re-entries as the competitors felt they could do better a
second time round. Geoff Barton, from Burwell, did exactly that with an
enormous improvement over his first round score to win the May Open on
46.
The trophy class were not far behind with Dave Peart-Smith from Newmarket, taking 1st with 43, Glynne Bourne from Balsham on 40 for 2nd and right behind him on 39 for 3rd place was Damian Flynn from Six Mile Bottom.
We are please to announce that Lloyds TSB Agriculture have generously agreed to sponsor the June Open, providing cash prize money and a prize shield to be awarded annually. More details to follow!
The 1st Home sponsored open was won by Geoff Barton with 44ex50. A Peck won second with 42, and Dave Peart-Smith won a shoot-off on the teal stand to take third place from Vic.
Sunday saw the Winter Series finalists battle it out in fairly good weather conditions at Country Pursuits Chittering. The four layouts
offered a variety of targets and as single birds were easy enough. The simultaneous pairs however, were a different story with testing targets on two layouts separating the men from the boys. Of the 8 finalists only three would be rewarded. Peter Garrod from Littleport, emerged the eventual winner with 92 ex 100. Alan Stronge from Chittering a close second on 89 and Willy Wong from Chesterton on 88 a very commendable third. The next competition is the 1sthome Open on Sunday 30th April, open to members and non members - and thanks to the sponsors of this competition 1st Home..
The winter series finalists have now been decided. Full details on the results page here. The finalists are
| A | CJ Saich, G Barton |
|---|---|
| B | AJ Stronge, P Moore |
| C | P Garrod, WK Wong, RWC Pitt, F McIntosh |
The final will be shot in parallel with the 9th April STR at the ground. No AA class shooters shot a qualifying number of times, so there is no AA representation in the final.
OK, I admit it, the webmaster (me) forgot we had this page; I'd been updating the news only on the front page! Sorry! Last weeks very wet sport trap was an interesting affair; the layouts were notable for the care with which you had to choose the order you shot the sim pairs in. This allowed those with more experience (of shooting, or scoring [Greg]) to score well, and punished those who didn't think about the order so much. Joking aside though, many congratulations for Greg Kirby for shooting a spectacular 82 in C class! Shame he went birds only :)
