The Winter Series kicked off with the October registered Sportrap - results from a nice shoot in perfect weather are here.
OK, I'm back from my holidays and back in the webmaster's saddle, so here comes the news again...
A successful fun day was held on Saturday 17th September; a number of less experienced club members were introduced to the joys of the two man flush for the first time, and Dave P-S put in a cracking display of 21 on the pool shoot - 9 clear of second place! The bar and BBQ were on cracking form, with live music from people who could sing (the band) and people who wanted to (the karaoke) !
Volunteers Needed! As many of you will know, the driving force behind setting up our shoots is Alan. The bad news is, he needs some new hips. The good news is, he's getting them on October 28th! We wish him all the best for his op and recuperation. Whilst he is recuperating, we will need plenty of volunteeers to help set up shoots - from 29th October (helping set up the Open) onwards for several months. Anyone who can help, please contact Greg so that he can co-ordinate things.
2005-6 Winter Series. Full details to follow, but it starts on 9th October, best 4 from 6 to count, and this year the cash prizes are open to non-members (trophies members only).
I've just done the sums - the club has 15, yes fifteen, of the 31 available county titles at senior, veterans and junior level. Well done to the five club members responsible (B, P and M Simpson, Rod Gifford and Brian Dunbavin)! I haven't worked out how many county team members we have, as the teams haven't been announced yet, but it's going to be lots...
Although the club does not have a Skeet layout, many of the members shoot the discipline, as was shown by the results of the Cambridgeshire ESK championships this weekend. Paul Clemence took the B class county trophy after a shoot-off with David Christensen - both 95ex100 and then 25 and 24ex25 in the shootoff. Sarah Christensen also took second in the ladies. Thus - subject to the team manager's final listings - the club has three members in the County Skeet Team!
Today saw the Cambridgeshire Sportrap Championship, a discipline the the club has long been involved with. Although the championship was sadly not held at our ground this year, club members turned out in force at Lakenheath CTC and dominated the championship, with club members securing Senior, Veterans and Juniors titles (and an only recently lapsed member taking the Colts). Full results are available on the Cambridgeshire CPSA website, but we reproduce here the winners' photograph with all except Jane Bell being Country Pursuits Members.

This weekend saw both the first Friday night of the summer, and final of the winter season. The Friday session had a fearsome super-pool layout which lived up to the difficulty levels expected on Fridays - despite 29 entries, the highest scores were Jamie Harding and Andy Brignall tied on 8 out of 10! The sportrap was also far from easy, although still popular with 33 entries despite the short evening, and Phil Gray put in an impressive 22 to narrowly beat Jamie and Andy tied (again!) on 21, and you illustrious webmaster on 20. There was of course some griping in the clubhouse that the layout had been set up in such a way as to allow a colt to beat the current county champion and several ex-England shooters, but that's probably to be expected in the circumstances! The winter series was won by Graham Carter by a single bird, with class winners of Brian Dunbavin (AA), Paul Clemence (A), Pat Moore (B) and JWW Wan (C), Graham having got through to win in the super-final as runner up in C class! Full results on the winter series results page. Congratulations to all who took part.
Today saw superb shooting weather - bordering on slightly hot in fact - and a good turnout for club practice day. It seems a number of people were dropping in on the club as a warm-up shoot before going on to the Cambridgeshire/Les King Memorial Sporting Championships at Barrow Heath. A good layout saw many shooters reaching the heady heights of 40+ ex 50, at least one for the first time! Hopefully equally good weather will hold for this Friday's first evening shoot of the year, and next Sunday's registered sportrap which includes the Winter Series final. If anyone wants to watch the final, it kicks off at 10am - an early start, but necessary to avoid interfering with the regular registered sportrap shoot.
The Open was won by J Welham with 48ex50, making a late appearance to wreck Geoff Barton's normally unflappable happy resolve and beat his 44. The members' trophy competition was fiercely fought, with David Christensen just taking the title with 42 ahead of John Dawson on 41 and Glynne Bourne on 39. The ladies' and colts' were sadly uncontested this month, although Sarah Christensen with 31 and Josh Pearson on 32 put in commendable scores. For more details of 10 year old (yes, ten) Josh's performance, see the Hall of Fame.
The last round of the winter series was completed today. The 100 STR was harder than it looked, with a top score of only 87 (from messrs Gifford (AA) and Spalding (shooting very well in B class)). The 9 finalists are:
| AA | B Dunbavin |
| A | P Clemence, G Barton |
| B | P Moore, W Wong |
| C | S Malyon, G Carter, D Christensen, JWW Wan |
Full details of all scores are on the winter series results page. The final will be held on 8th May, alongside the regular monthly STR competition.
A successful clean-up day was had at the club - once again we were very lucky with the weather. 8-10 people dropped in and out during the day to help. Another half-dozen of the cages were prepped and painted, two new stand positions were cut into the trees at the north west end of the ground, and a general clean up was done. A big thank-you to all those that turned up to help, particularly those who had to leave early and therefore missed the free shoot we had (which was won by Phil Pitt on 35, with Ian and Dave having to split the loser-buys-the-round penalty at the Otter afterwards with 22 apiece)
Happy Easter everyone! Easter Sunday's Open competition saw a good turnout with some close results in the members' trophy competition (42,41,40,39,39) which was won by Vic. In an unexpected twist the ladies' prize had to be decided by a shoot-off between Gill Gordon and Sarah Christensen. Gill won the toss and elected to shoot first, missing the first bird of ten, but straighting the rest, a feat promptly repeated by Sarah. In the sudden death simultaneous pairs, Gill dropped won of her first pair but Sarah didn't, thus giving Sarah the ladies' prize (of cartridges). I'm sure the -very friendly - battle between these two will continue however, as it was only last month that Gill won!
A date - Saturday 2nd April - has been picked for the second "work day" at the ground. Members are cordially invited to come and "muck in" on various tasks around the ground - clearing some rubbish, painting some more of the stands, repairing signs, replacing rope etc. We'll end the day with a fun shoot, free to anyone who's put at least a half day into the cleanup, so bring your kit!

Today saw the delayed fourth round of the winter series STR competition. The shoot started with an easy-ish layout, a moderate 2nd layout (with a very challenging rabbit/crosser pair), and a third layout that caused some bad language :) The real test was then to put the third layout behind you and maintain concentration for a slightly easier fourth layout. Or so it seemed to your webmaster. What was noticeable was that people seemed to be shooting very much in class; C Class shots generally in the 60s, Bs in the high 60s and low 70s, A in 70s, AA in 80s and Michael Simpson on 97. A truly impressive result, underlining his status as County Junior Sportrap Champion, and 6 birds clear of Brian Dunbavin in second. |

Old News: 16th Feb 2005
A new page has been added here showing the scores to date in the winter series. So far, class leaders are Messrs Dunbavin, Gifford, Bedord and Maylon, but anyone still in it could still win it (just!).
Those of you in Cambridge over this weekend will have noticed the extremely strong, extremely variable, gusting winds. Owing to the compact nature of the ground and the large number of traps that would have to be monitored during a 100-bird STR competition, the committee took the decision on safety grounds to cancel the registered shoot due for today. Instead a 50-bird ESP was put on with traps well out into the fields (or birds going very rapidly away from shooters). This provided an environment where we could be sure that the clay (and for that matter shot) fallout would be in safe areas. I'm sure that all club members will agree that safety is paramount, and that such decisions should be fully supported.
This does affect the winter series; today should have been round 5/6. Instead we will shoot round 5 in March and the last round in April. Please see the fixtures page for full details.
On a lighter note, a new chapter opened in one of the club's long-running rivalries. David Christensen (your webmaster) was finally beaten by Sarah Christensen, his wife. They have both been shooting for slightly less than two years, and Sarah has in recent weeks been nibbling away at David's traditional lead as her form has improved from a low point in November. Today, despite the gusty conditions, Sarah put in a solid 33ex50 including 17 consecutive kills to achieve a one point margin over her husband (and a number of other notable club shooters, eh Bob? [Ed]). Apparently the secret of Sarah's success is "Hippopotamus". I'll let club members ask her about that themselves when they see her at the ground!
The club was well represented at the AGM of Cambridgeshire CPSA on Tuesday, and this year's committee contains a number of club members commensurate with its role in the county. The full committee of 13 (full list to follow) includes the following club members: Bob Pitt (County Treasurer, to add to his Club Treasurer duties), David Christensen, Sarah Christensen, Paul Clemence and Brian Dunbavin. The AGM attracted 32 of the country's 476 members - not bad considering the wintery weather, and saw a number of club members receiving county championship trophies - Brian Dunbavin, Kevin Flitton, and Rod Gifford (several times!).
Yesterday's shoot was well attended despite the cold. A good confidence-building sporttrap layout with easy-ish singles are nicely challenging pairs was combined with a sporting course that varied from warm-up to impossible in the space of five stands. Although to be fair to Alan it was only the 45 yard right-to-left looper on stand 3 that no-one could find...
Yesterday's shoot (club level practice) saw a good turnout. Plenty of new faces were evident which is always good to see - I just hope they enjoyed the evil rabbit trap on stand 3 as much as I did : 40 yard rabbit disappearing into a hole in the ground if you weren't quick, paired with a very fast crosser. A challenging stand. Stand 5 was also a laugh - two easy incomers, but crossing over. Many a shot came unstuck by trying to show off and get them both with one shell...
The 4th round of the winter series STR competition is being held this weekend; if the wind doesn't ease up, anyone could win it! Update: the wind eased to almost dead calm, and some fine scores were had.
